Abduction and induction from a non-monotonic reasoning perspective

چکیده
In this chapter, induction and abduction are investigated in a non-monotonic reasoning framework. We recall that several meanings can be given to logic-based abduction and induction. In particular, we distinguish explanatory and descriptive induction. Explanatory induction is closely related to abduction. Descriptive induction is related to abduction in a less straightforward way. While both can be modelled as deduction from a completed theory, diierent completion policies must be considered. Actually, induction does not require properties to be circumscribed but individuals, while abduction does not require individuals to be circumscribed but properties.

Abduction and Beyond in Logic Programming with Application to Morality
In this paper we emphasize two different aspects of abduction in Logic Programming (LP): (1) the engineering of LP abduction systems, and (2) application of LP abduction, complemented with other non-monotonic features, to model morality issues. For the LP engineering part, we present an implemented tabled abduction technique in order to reuse priorly obtained (and tabled) abductive solutions, f...
متن کاملAbduction and Induction: Syllogistic and Inferential Perspectives
Abduction and induction are reasoning forms for drawing conclusions from incomplete information. Induction, i.e. inferring properties of sets of individuals from properties of individuals, was already distinguished by Aristotle, while the term ‘abduction’ was introduced much later by Peirce for inference of explanations for observed phenomena. Both reasoning forms are presently being studied an...
متن کاملThe Complexity of Restricted Consequence Finding and Abduction
We analyze the complexity of propositional kernel resolution (del Val 1999), a general method for obtaining logical consequences in restricted target languages. Different choices of target are relevant to important AI tasks, e.g. prime implicates, satisfiability, abduction and non-monotonic reasoning, and polynomial-size knowl-
متن کاملOn the Diierence between Abduction and Induction: a Model Theoretic Perspective
In this paper, we show how an appropriate possible world semantics exhibits the fundamental diierences between various forms of logical reasoning such as deduction, abduction and induction. The ensuing model theoretic formal-isation provides a solid foundation for exact further discourse on the issue, such as deciding whether a particular instance of reasoning should be classiied as abduction o...
متن کاملAbduction Compared with Negation by Failure
Horn clause logic programming can be extended to include abduction with integrity constraints. In the resulting extension of logic programming, negation by failure can be simulated by making negative conditions abducible and by imposing appropriate denials and disjunctions as integrity constraints. This gives an alternative semantics for negation by failure, which generalises the stable model s...
